Hello world! As a member that is new of web log team, we am so excited to share with you many of my day-to-day experiences as an Assistant Director of Admission at USC. They often ask questions like ‘what do you do on a daily basis?’ or ‘do you need to work with the summertime? when I talk to my friends and family about my job,’ I’m hoping that through my monthly additions to this weblog, you are going to get a much better idea of what we do each day as admission counselors.

So allow’s start with the current. This morning I woke up during the Courtyard Marriott in Vienna, VA. My visit that is first began 7:45 am. That might sound early to some, reasonable to others, but we can let you know, this morning at 7:45 am, we was tired (7:45 am in VA feels like 3:45 am in CA…oy.) You see, my trip from Los Angeles was supposed to reach Reagan National Airport at 3:43 pm yesterday (to be precise.) But instead, due to a cockpit that is wet (I kid you not,) my trip was delayed three hours. Luckily, my first school see today constantly has coffee waiting I was especially appreciative today (Thanks Sheila! for me, and) I visit, at this school it’s a different format which consists mostly of me answering questions although I usually give about a 30 minute presentation to students when. Thankfully the students came prepared. They asked great questions and I think I just stuttered a few times.

I’d time to kill before my second visit and luckily found a Peet’s Coffee on my way. We stopped for many morning meal and a coffee refill. In a world that is perfect arrive about 10 moments just before a visit, but often i am about 15 to 20 minutes early. Thankfully, my car’s air conditioning kept me cool while I consumed my bagel and drank my latte. Today I became also in a position to talk with some counselors which is constantly a highlight of my day. College counselors are always packed with information about students, their schools, and usually life as a whole. It reminds me personally of my high school times where We spent lot of time on my counselor’s couch.

Just How numerous shmoop.pro coffee cups are you able to find in this image?

My third visit today had been to a school I’ve never visited prior to. There were about eight students present plus one had been even using a USC t-shirt. This pupil, let’s call him Brandon, told me about his recent visit to campus so we had a moment to gush over how USC that is pretty is. I like sharing common USC experiences with pupils, especially when i am abroad.

Finally, between my third and fourth check out this morning, I became able to grab a 6′ veggie delight as I drove to the following senior school. A nice reminder of the relationships I continue to build at each school upon checking in, my picture from last year’s visit appeared in their computer.

After my fifth and visit that is final, I returned to my hotel, debriefed my time in the shape of notes and headed to the closest Starbucks to catch up on some work. My first instinct is obviously to check my email. Oh look! I got a message from Brandon I mentioned thanking me for my visit and asking a question about something. Love when that happens!

I really hope to satisfy many of you as I carry on my travels! If there’s whatever else you intend to know about our experiences visiting your school that is high feel absolve to leave concerns into the remark section and I shall do my better to return to you soon!

Fight On!

Mythbuster: we need certainly to show the admission counselors that USC is my top choice

The Myth: Attending university fairs, visits and tours will increase my likelihood of admission.

The Verdict: Not at USC.

Every late August/early September, you will find 5 or so emails in my inbox each and every morning with all the subject ‘Introduction to USC.’ These emails usually have a similar format that is general. ‘Hello Jessica- just desired to let you know that I go to ABC senior high school, I play baseball and I also can’t wait to use to USC. I’ve always wished to be described as a learning student in the Marshall School of Business.’ Ok great, but what am I supposed to state? Good fortune along with your baseball season? Every winter, I get comparable emails with the subject ‘Update.’ Students tell me how their first semester went, they got the role that is lead the spring musical, and that USC remains their very first option. Awesome, but chances are I already saw your senior year grades (or will soon).

At USC, we don’t monitor students’s interest outside of this application that is actual admission decision purposes. Attending our programs is a way that is wonderful discover more about USC, but planning to an event or sending email messages like those we described will not increase your chances of admission to your university.

As admission counselors, it’s true that individuals are your main contact as you have the admission process at USC and we are content to help you with any help you may require. However, students just benefit from trying to us whether they have specific questions- especially concerns to which they can not find the clear answer online. I think students often confuse this role and make the assumption they’ve to e-mail us and start a conversation in order to have a shot at admission.

So how do you show us you’re interested in USC? rather than spending your time emailing us with updates, it is in your absolute best interest to use that time to the office on your response to the application question ‘Describe your academic interest and how you want to pursue them at USC.’ You should talk about specific resources and possibilities you want to take advantage of at USC. instead of emailing us your list of activities, fill the activity Summary out completely. A thoughtful and very carefully assembled application stands out much more than an introduction email or an invite to coffee.

Bear in mind that some educational schools may track demonstrated interest. Some colleges may expect all pupils to reach out to them, while other people may expect students within the area that is local go to campus. The notion of demonstrated interest varies, if it is factored into an admission decision so you should always ask a school if and how they track interest and.

At the end of the day, we do want to see that you are seriously considering being a student here that you are interested in USC and. The way that is best so that you can articulate this interest is during your application.
